Acoustic Engagement Session in the Woods – Brooke + James

James and Brooke are the dream couple that every photographer wishes they could photograph. With art being one of their great mutual loves, they both have a knack for fashion, a heart for photography, and a soft spot for music. What more perfect of an engagement shoot could have culminated from their personalities?! From the moment we began planning their session, they already had the ultimate location selected from many of their past adventures together. The light shined so beautifully through those dark, pretty trees. I immediately knew when we arrived that soft delicate images with gorgeous bokeh would be absolutely necessary! With a film-photography approach, nearly all the editing was done completely in camera and just a kiss of warmth was added in post.

All of the details in this shoot were intentional and meaningful. The three different original film cameras, two Minoltas and a Canon AE-1, were placed over a soft ivory vintage blanket to represent their love for photography and film. James brought one of his favorite hats and wore suspenders to reflect Brooke’s love for another era. We laid down a suitcase next to them inspired by their heart for adventure. And James played Brooke soft acoustic melodies under the leaves while she smiled at him. It was the most romantic of settings.

Not only was their engagement session an absolute dream to photograph, they also have the sweetest love story. James met Brooke at their church, where he played drums, when she was in just the sixth grade. They fell into a young love, and their relationship matured as they did.

The day that James proposed, Brooke knew he was acting a little strange but hadn’t the slightest clue that he had something shiny in his pocket. They were off to the beach, but she fell into a deep sleep during the ride there. When the car stopped, they were at the zoo. Brooke initially questioned James but then just went along with it like it was any other day. After their time spent with the animals, James took Brooke over to the seaside of San Diego by the big naval ship. Surrounded by a crowd of tourists and sights to see, he asked a stranger to take a photo. Brooke turned around to fix her hair, and when she turned back James was on one knee!

This engagement session is so precious! My favorite photo is the last one in black and white! But I also love the shot from above where James is looking into the camera. Amazing work Jenna, as always you are so creative and talented. <3ReplyCancel
